Are you or a loved one touched by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)? At the Mental Health Management Group (MHMG), we’re here to provide knowledge, compassion, and resources to help you navigate the world of ASD with confidence.
What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a wide range of neurodevelopmental conditions that affect individuals across a broad spectrum, with a range of symptoms, skills, and levels of impairment. Challenges in social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors characterize it. ASD is often described as a “spectrum” because it manifests differently in each person, and individuals with ASD can have varying strengths and difficulties.
Types of Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), previously called Asperger’s Syndrome: Individuals with Asperger’s syndrome typically have average or above-average intelligence and language skills but struggle with social interactions and have intense interests in specific topics.
Rhett Syndrome: Although often grouped with ASD, Rett syndrome is a separate genetic disorder primarily affecting girls. It leads to severe impairments in physical and cognitive development.
Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (CDD): This is a rare subtype where children develop typically for a period but then experience a severe loss of skills in areas like language, social interaction, and motor skills.
Kanner’s Syndrome or Classic Autistic Disorder: This was used before the broader ASD classification. Social communication and interaction challenges, repetitive behaviors, and restricted interests characterize classic autism.
Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS): This category was used for individuals who displayed some, but not all, of the characteristics of classic autism. It was often used for individuals with milder symptoms.
Our Services for Autism Spectrum Disorder
A Diagnostic Assessment is the initial step in understanding and confirming ASD. Our experienced clinicians conduct thorough evaluations to assess an individual’s behaviors, communication skills, social interactions, and developmental history. This assessment leads to an accurate diagnosis, clarifying whether ASD is present and its severity.
Personalized Treatment involves tailoring interventions to address the unique needs and strengths of each individual with ASD. This may include a combination of therapies such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), speech therapy, occupational therapy, and social skills training. The goal is to enhance communication, social interactions, and daily living skills to help individuals with ASD reach their full potential.
